Brown University’s softball team lost to Cornell, 8-6, at Niemand-Robison Field on April 27. The defeat ended Brown’s six-game winning streak.

The game was significant as it marked a halt to the Bears’ momentum late in the season. Brown recorded nine hits during the match, with Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Alyssa Villarde each contributing two hits. Villarde and Lilly Burns both hit two-run home runs for Brown. Edie Cobb took the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing six runs, while Macy Borowski pitched for 2.1 innings and allowed two runs.

Cornell began scoring in the second inning and maintained their lead until Brown briefly went ahead in the fourth when Villarde hit a home run after Zytkewicz Ray singled, making it 2-1 for Brown. However, Cornell answered with five runs in their half of the fourth inning to take a commanding lead.

In the sixth inning, Jasmine Hsiao started a rally for Brown with a single, followed by walks from Maya Choksi and Elli Thompson. Abby Bettencourt then singled up the middle to drive in two runs and reduce Cornell’s lead.

Cornell responded again with more offense in their half of the sixth inning, extending their advantage before Burns hit another home run for Brown in the seventh to bring her team within two runs. Despite getting runners on base late in the game, Brown could not complete its comeback as a strikeout and groundout ended their efforts.

Looking ahead, Brown will play Dartmouth next as they make up a postponed game scheduled for April 28.
