The Providence College men’s golf team will participate in the Wofford Invitational from April 12 to April 14 at the Country Club of Spartanburg, according to an announcement on Apr. 10. The tournament is hosted by Wofford College and will feature a three-round stroke-play format.
This event is significant as it brings together a field of 15 teams, including schools such as Furman University, University of South Carolina Aiken, Western Carolina University, and others. The Friars will play on the Donald Ross-designed par-72 course that measures 6,648 yards. Tee times are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and Monday and at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
In their previous outing at the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate in Snow Hill, North Carolina, Providence finished 14th with a team score of 935 (+71). Freshman Callan Fahey led the Friars with an individual score of 233 (+17), tying for 67th place and recording the most birdies by any Friar during that event.
Earlier this season at the Peoples Championship held at Sea Island Resort in Georgia, Providence placed 18th out of a field of twenty-one teams with a score of 877 (+25). Fahey again was the top performer for Providence, tying for twenty-second place overall after shooting an even-par total across three rounds.
The team’s spring season began at Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico where they finished fourteenth among fifteen teams. Junior Campbell Skelly led with a tie for thirty-fourth place individually after carding his lowest round of the tournament—a two-under-par seventy—which was also one of the best rounds recorded that day by any competitor.
Providence resumed varsity competition this academic year after more than two decades away from NCAA events. Their best finish so far came at Bash in the Boro last fall when they secured fifth place as freshman Will Spring shot six-under sixty-six—the lowest round posted by any Friar this season.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s lineup are Callan Fahey, Campbell Skelly, Evan Buddenhagen, Will Spring, and Logan Jaeger. After completing play at Spartanburg next week, Providence will travel to Kingston, New York for The Roar-EE Invitational scheduled for April eighteenth.
