The Providence College softball team won both games of a doubleheader against DePaul on March 20 at Glay Field. The Friars took the first game with a decisive 17-1 victory in five innings and followed up with a close 7-6 win in the second game.
The results improve Providence’s record to 10-11 overall and 4-1 in the BIG EAST conference, while DePaul falls to 12-17 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Junior Cameron Dunn led the Friars’ offense throughout the day, collecting four runs batted in and hitting a home run.
In the opening game, Providence established an early lead with a two-run home run from Dunn and an RBI from Hailey Frantz. The team added seven more runs in the second inning, highlighted by Brianna De La Fuente’s three-run home run. Additional RBIs came from Emily Jonte, Sofia Peterson, Frantz, and Gabriella Lee. Elisa Smith contributed an RBI single in the third inning, while Julia Renny drove in two runs during a six-run fourth inning. Pitcher Alyssa Twomey earned the win after throwing four innings and recording four strikeouts. The team’s 17 runs marked its highest total since scoring 18 against Coppin State on March 4, 2022.
In game two, DePaul scored twice in the first inning before Providence responded with three runs in the second behind singles from Jonte, Dunn, and Peterson. Smith stole third base and scored on a throwing error to extend the lead to 4-2. After DePaul regained control with four runs in the sixth inning, Providence answered back as Lee hit an RBI single followed by Jonte’s two-RBI single to secure the win. Tori Grifone pitched nearly two innings of relief for Providence and recorded two strikeouts for the victory.
Providence will conclude its series against DePaul on March 21 at Glay Field. The final game will also serve as senior day for the program, featuring a postgame ceremony.
