The Providence College softball team will travel to South Kingstown, Rhode Island, for a midweek matchup against the University of Rhode Island on April 22. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
This meeting comes as Providence holds a record of 23-15 overall and 12-3 in BIG EAST play. The Friars have recently experienced strong momentum, winning 19 of their last 23 games and achieving a program-best start in conference play with seven wins and one loss. Their eight-game winning streak earlier this season tied a school record before ending against Seton Hall.
Key players for Providence include Cameron Dunn, Sofia Peterson, and Elisa Smith, each reaching the milestone of 100 career hits. Dunn has set a new single-season home run record for the program with her thirteenth home run on April 15 against Boston University. She leads the team with fifty runs batted in (RBI), fourteen home runs, and an .883 slugging percentage while batting .423; both her home run total and slugging percentage rank second in the BIG EAST. Emily Jonte has also contributed significantly with a .414 batting average and was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after helping sweep DePaul.
On the pitching staff, junior Alyssa Twomey leads with a nine-win-one-loss record and a 3.29 earned run average (ERA), which is second best in the conference. Last week she was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week after throwing two complete games—including one shutout—in victories over St. John’s. Freshman Addy Frye has emerged as another key pitcher for Providence, earning recent recognition as BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week following wins over Brown and UConn.
Rhode Island enters Wednesday’s contest with an overall record of sixteen wins and twenty-three losses (5-13 Atlantic Ten Conference). Offensively they are led by Kylie Bulinski (.370 average) along with Brooke Fairbanks (.386) and Sydney Orndorff (.337). On the mound Avery Vale-Cruz leads URI pitchers with seven wins while Brooke Gerry has recorded seventy-four strikeouts this season.
After facing Rhode Island, Providence will host Villanova from April 24 through April 26 at Glay Field for a three-game series that will be streamed on ESPN+.
