No. 3 Bridgewater State, No. 4 UMass Dartmouth Advance to 2022 LEC Women’s Tennis Semifinals

The higher seeds prevailed in the First Round of the 2022 Little East Conference (LEC) Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament. Third-seeded Bridgewater State University posted a 5-0 win over sixth-seeded Salem State University, while fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth was a 5-3 victor over fifth-seeded Plymouth State University.

 

No. 3 Bridgewater State 5, No. 6 Salem State 0

 

The Bears (9-4) swept the three doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead on the Vikings (2-11). Senior Mackenzie Silveira and junior Allison Carter cruised to an 8-0 victory at second singles over junior Samantha Tenney and sophomore Abbie Laliberte, while sophomore Madeline Von Ruden and junior Abigail Ramer teamed up for an 8-1 decision at number one against sophomore Miah Reyes and freshman Kenzie McLaren. The sophomore tandem of Meghan Lotti and Rebecca Hamel capped off doubles play with an 8-1 win at the third spot versus senior Cassie Liu and sophomore Erin Curristin.

 

Carter breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 straight set win at fourth singles over Laliberte before Von Ruden secured the decisive fifth point with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at number one singles over Tenny.

 

No. 4 UMass Boston 5, No. 5 Plymouth State 3

 

The Corsairs (12-5) trailed 2-1 after doubles, getting on the board as senior McKenzie Ferrari and junior Caroline Lemieux notched an 8-3 win over the junior tandem of Sarah Asciutto and Erin Good at number three.

 

Juniors IsaBella Winter and Ailey Riddick both rebounded to win their singles matchups for UMass Dartmouth. Winter registered a 6-1, 6-1 win at number one over senior Megan Marshall, while Riddick posted a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at number 5 over sophomore Elena Cardoso. Alanna O’Connell was also a three-set winner over freshman Alyssa Craigie, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and freshman Bailey Clark downed junior Erin Good 6-0, 6-0 at number six

 

The Panthers’ (6-7) doubles wins came at the top-two positions, as Marshall and sophomore Tessa LaBarre downed Riddick and Winter 8-7 at number one, with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker, while Craigie and Cardoso posted an 8-7 win at number two over O'Connell and freshman Zuri Walters, winning the tie-breaker 8-6. Plymouth State’s lone singles win was at number two, where LaBarre defeated sophomore Claire Yang 6-2, 6-3.
