Eastern Connecticut State University senior All-America forward Anna Barry has been named as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Division III National Player-of-the-Week in women's basketball for the week ending Jan. 1, announced today.
In two non-conference wins last weekend at the Babson College Invitational, the six-foot Barry averaged 20.5 rebounds and 14.0 points to go along with five total steals, four assists and four blocks, recording her sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season.
After setting a personal best of 19 rebounds in a 72-45 win over Endicott College on the first day of the tournament, Barry improved that with 22 in a 66-61 double-overtime win over Middlebury College. In the second overtime against Middlebury, she scored six points in a minute to break the final tie and give the Warriors a 61-55 lead inside the final minute.
She becomes the first Little East Conference women's basketball player given the award this year.
In addition to earning the USBWA weekly award, Barry was selected as the Little East Player-of-the-Week for the second time (the 13th LEC weekly honor of her career) this year and to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) honor roll for the fourth time this season.
This year, Barry is ranked first in the LEC in rebounding (12.6), third in scoring (15.3), tied for fourth in field goal percentage (50.0) and tied for second in blocks (1.8). Her rebounding average ranks her in a tie for 11th in the NCAA and she is ranked in the national Top 20 in double-doubles (tied-15th/7).
A two-sport All-America and two-sport Little East Player-of-the-Year, Barry is ranked in the program's Top 10 in scoring (12.6) and rebounding (8.4). She is ranked first in blocks per game (2.06) and in blocks (224) and third in field goal percentage (53.9).
A winner of five straight, Eastern (9-3, 3-0 Little East) returns to conference action today at two-time defending LEC tournament champion Rhode Island College.
