PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced today that a West Warwick man has been found guilty in Kent County Superior Court of two counts of first-degree child molestation against a female victim under the age of 14 between 2006 and 2008.

On March 8, 2023, following the conclusion of a three-day trial before Superior Court Justice Luis Matos, the jury found Nelson Carreiro (age 42) guilty of two counts of first-degree child molestation. The jury returned the verdict after approximately 90 minutes of deliberation.

The defendant is currently being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) pending a sentencing hearing scheduled for April 28, 2023, in Kent County Superior Court.

“No result in a courtroom can undo the traumatic harm the defendant caused the little girl he sexually assaulted here, but I hope today’s verdict brings some measure of comfort to her and her family. I commend this child for her courage in coming forward, and ultimately doing an extraordinarily brave thing: confronting her accuser and ensuring that he will no longer be able to harm others.  He now faces a long state prison sentence, and deservedly so,” said Attorney General Neronha. “I am grateful to the Rhode Island State Police for their continued outstanding work and partnership in this case, and in so many others.”

During the trial, the State proved beyond a reasonable doubt that between 2006 and 2008, the defendant sexually assaulted a female victim under the age of 14, who was known to him, multiple times at an apartment in East Greenwich. The victim reported the molestation after she moved out of state, and the case was forwarded to the Rhode Island State Police for investigation.

Captain Michael McGlynn (ret.) and Detective Corporal Kyle Draper of the Rhode Island State Police and Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan of the Office of the Attorney General led the investigation and prosecution of the case.
