A Cranston man has admitted to robbing a bank in East Providence on New Year's Eve in 2019, a location he had previously targeted during a series of robberies in 2012. United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha announced that Justin Worley, 44, known as the "Bearded Bandit," confessed to participating in the robbery.
Worley and another individual entered the bank late on December 31, 2019. They approached tellers and demanded money. Nicholas Lage, 38, was identified as Worley's accomplice and brandished a knife during the incident. The two men fled with approximately $12,000 but were apprehended later that evening at Twin River casino.
Worley pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit bank robbery and bank robbery. His sentencing is scheduled for January 30, 2025. The sentence will be determined by a federal district judge following consideration of U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Nicholas Lage had already pleaded guilty on April 1, 2021, to similar charges and was sentenced on August 6, 2021, to three years of incarceration followed by three years of supervised release.
Assistant United States Attorney Ronald R. Gendron is prosecuting the case. The investigation was conducted by the East Providence Police Department and the FBI.
