Zachary A. Cunha has stepped down as United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island following a directive from the White House. He had previously submitted his resignation to both the President and the Attorney General, indicating his intention to leave office by the end of this week.

In a statement, Cunha expressed gratitude to Senators Reed and Whitehouse for recommending him for the position, as well as to President Biden for appointing him. "I have worked hard every day to live up to the example of excellence set by my thirty-eight distinguished predecessors over the 235-year history of this Office, and it has been the honor of my career to do this job," he said.

During his three-year tenure, Cunha focused on various challenges, including addressing the opioid crisis in Rhode Island. His office prosecuted significant cases such as "the largest illegal pill seizure in the United States" and took legal action against a major pharmacy chain for noncompliance related to opioid prescriptions. Additionally, efforts were made to prosecute criminals exploiting those in recovery while collaborating with public health authorities on education programs.

Cunha's office also targeted fraudsters and businesses involved in criminal activities impacting communities. They prioritized protecting federal taxpayers from fraud and ensuring military personnel are not endangered by counterfeit gear. The office took a strong stance against violent crime and pursued civil rights initiatives aimed at fair lending practices and supporting children with behavioral disabilities.

Reflecting on his team’s accomplishments, Cunha stated: "In these, and countless other areas, the men and women of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island exemplify excellence in public service."

Zachary A. Cunha was sworn in as U.S. Attorney on December 13, 2021, after being nominated by President Joseph R. Biden Jr., and confirmed by the Senate. During his time in office, he served on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee advising senior leadership on policy matters.

Before becoming U.S. Attorney, Cunha spent two decades with the Department of Justice across several districts including New York and Massachusetts focusing on civil enforcement related to healthcare fraud among other responsibilities.

Cunha holds degrees from Brown University (A.B., with honors) and George Washington University Law School (J.D., with honors).
