City of Providence recently issued the following announcement.

Join us on Saturday, May 7, 2022, as we celebrate National Astronomy Day co-hosted by Skyscrapers, Inc. (Amateur Astronomical Society of RI), and the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium.  Activities kick-off at the Museum of Natural History, Roger Williams Park and will run from 12:30-3:30pm with planetarium shows at 1pm and 2pm (planetarium show tickets must be purchased online), public solar observing, and astronomy activities.  White light, hydrogen alpha, and projection telescopes will be set up in front of the museum for viewing the magnificent details of the sun.  Skyscrapers members and museum staff will be presenting activity tables that will include: Beginner Astronomy, Exoplanets and Variable Stars, the James Webb Space Telescope, Solar Observing, and the Effects of Light Pollution.

Other happenings:

Ladd Observatory will conduct public solar observing on the grounds of the observatory at Brown University from 1:00pm-3:00pm.  White light, hydrogen alpha, and projection telescopes will be available for solar observing.

Seagrave Memorial Observatory in N. Scituate will host a membership meeting (public invited) with a talk by long time member Rick Lynch.  Always an entertaining speaker, Rick’s talk will be about a recent trip to Italy where he visited the Vatican Observatory and several sites made famous by Galileo.  The observatory’s 8 3/4” Alvin Clark,  12” Meade, and 16” Meade telescopes will be open from 7:00pm-9:30pm for viewing a variety of celestial objects.
